Toxic Ingredients - More Common Than You Think

Several years ago I decided to take being Gluten Free a step further and make sure ALL of my skin care products were gluten free as well (to eliminate skin reactions and accidental glutenings). What I didn't know was that my world was going to be turned around by this and send me on a new journey.

I read the ingredient labels of every single skin care product our family was using. This was a lot of reading. Not only did I find gluten hiding in there, I also discovered that I had NO IDEA what most of the ingredients actually were. Google and I spent some time together and Google helped me to discover that I didn't like these ingredients. By the end of my translation session I had decided that I COULD NOT IN GOOD CONSCIENCE apply any of our store bought skin care products on our family - gluten or no gluten. I struggled to find eco friendly, health friendly, and gluten free alternatives. Well, this posed a problem because I didn't want our family to be a smelly, dirty mess. I like to think of myself as a clever and resourceful gal, so it seemed only natural that I learned how to make what we needed - soap, balms, air fresheners, shampoo, beard oil, bug sprays, etc. It was a lot of work and time consuming to source out all of the ingredients as well as to create the products, but I enjoyed it and felt SO much better knowing that our exposure to harmful chemicals was that much more reduced.  And then I had a light bulb moment that changed my career path. I wanted to share it with the world.  I wanted not just my family but other families to benefit from using products that weren't exposing them to chemicals that may very well negatively and severely impact their health. (WARNING: This is where I do a little bit of shameless self promotion.) I am now an entrepreneur (or mompreneur as some call it) and owner of Glorious Life, providing families all over Canada with natural, organic, safe, body care products made without all those toxic ingredients. Yes, I would love it if you would try my products, but that's not why I am writing this blog post. I'm writing it to raise awareness of the ingredients that we put on our bodies. Honestly, this has become a bit of a passion of mine. While I would love my business to continue to prosper and grow, I am also passionate about sharing my experience and knowledge so that you can make informed decisions for you and your families.

Our skin is our largest organ.  Did you catch that? Our skin is our LARGEST organ, and it envelopes all of our other organs, our blood supply, and our body systems.  Why then are we applying such harmful ingredients to our LARGEST ORGAN?   My research turned up that some of the most common toxins found in store brand soaps and body products include those listed below:

Triclosan (carcinogenic antibacterial chemical agent)
Dioxane (carcinogenic chemical particularly harmful to the brain, liver, kidneys)
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/SLS (carcinogenic, hormone disruptor, makes skin more permeable to other harmful chemicals)
Diethanolamine/DEA (carcinogenic, linked specifically to kidney and liver cancer, possibly harmful to developing brain of unborn children)
Formaldehyde / Chemicals that release Formaldehyde such as Diazolidinyl Urea (weakens immune system, respitory disorders, chronic fatigue, headaches, irregular heartbeat)
Parabens / ie. Methylparaben & Propylparaben (carcinogenic, nervous system toxicity)
Fragrance (synthetic chemical scents that can lead to chronic dizziness, nausea, rashes, depression, respiratory problems, headaches, etc.)
PEG-6 (carcinogenic)

And these are just a few of the most common toxic chemicals found in the mass produced popular brand soaps and body products. There are so many more in there to be concerned about.  I dare you to take a peak at the label of your soap and then google the ingredients as well as their potential health impacts.  Scary stuff.
